Luc Delamain
Luc Delamain (born in 1961) is an architect and partner at SCAU, an architectural collective. His artistic practice, closely intertwined with his exploration of space and light, encompasses photography, drawing, and clay modelling. From raw clay, shaped instinctively, emerge heads, faces, and masks. Formed through spontaneous gestures, these figures are then photographed blindly, with a free approach to framing, light, and movement. Photography transforms them, revealing expressions and presences that might otherwise remain unseen.Between appearance and disappearance, familiarity and strangeness, these figures open up a space for multiple interpretations and emotions. It is in this encounter between imaginations, in what escapes the artist’s intention and comes into being through the gaze of another, that the essence of his practice lies: to initiate a dialogue, evoke emotion, and allow connections to emerge.
TERRE
The son of a mason, Luc Delamain grew up observing the physical, time-sensitive work of plaster and cement, witnessing the precise moment when malleability gives way to solidity. He began working with clay in 2020. Without tools, he shapes and moulds directly with his hands, influenced by Art Brut and guided by the material itself and its almost limitless possibilities.Like ghostly presences, figures emerge, seeming to reappear, or even to rise from their own ashes.
The photographs of the heads and masks are taken blindly, through a succession of gestures and movements. Shaping the figures in their own way, light and darkness heighten their expressions and bring forth new ones. Unexpected, previously unimaginable.Striking in their truthfulness, the images reveal the aura of the sculptures, the atmosphere that emanates from them.
IMAGINAIRES
The images find an immediate resonance in the inner worlds of those who view them. Faces once encountered, experiences lived, works of art glimpsed, buried memories… resurface as if reflected in a mirror. Conversations begin. It is precisely for this purpose that Luc Delamain photographs his sculptures. Each shared visual experience reaffirms his conviction that “what we see has value — and comes alive — only through what looks back at us.”
The exhibition Têtes brings together fifteen photographs and a bronze sculpture in a setting that lends itself to an unadorned spatial arrangement and dialogue, amid the bare, raw walls of a house under renovation in Arles.

The series Headless Bodies began in 2015 and remains ongoing. Taken blindly underwater, freed from the photographer’s gaze, the images reveal the beauty of bodies dancing in weightlessness. A beauty of which the subjects themselves are unaware, as are those who inhabit the space.
